How we gave a top fitness club a winning acoustics strategy for noise control
Addressing problem with a measured solution
After opening a new state-of-the-art fitness and gym facility in Bolton, David Lloyd Leisure was required to adopt an effective acoustics strategy and manage sound levels in order to keep the locals on their side. Several of their plant units recorded excessive noise levels, including 2 large externally mounted ‘V’ compressors.
Each of these compressors was over 3m high and accommodated six 1m diameter fans on top for air movement.
Innovation and dedication – expertise and a quick response
Keen to deal with the situation as soon as possible, David Lloyd Bolton contacted Sound Advice Acoustics for our expert advice and the possible noise abatement solutions that were available to them.
Moving the units was not going to be an option as the pipework and the electrics were pre-sunk into the ground during the initial construction. Speed was paramount, so we quickly undertook several 24hr noise surveys and also took many source levels to identify the exact cause of the issue.
Deadlines set, deadlines met
From an acoustic point of view, the 2 large compressors would need enclosing. However, the units required a high volume of free air and velocity through their system for them to operate efficiently.
Sound Advice Acoustic’s expertise in noise abatement and our engineering background enabled us to specify, design, manufacture and install a highly effective acoustic enclosure, delighting both David Lloyd Bolton and the local community with our noise control solution.
